Newsletter Cefn Sidan U3A – September 2018
Theatre/Excursions –All trips – please note that whenever travelling on a U3A outing to have a record of all medication that you may be taking. Small cards for these details are available to keep in your purse or wallet.
Drama – Plans are underway for productions at Christmas and perhaps at the 25th Anniversary next March. We still would really appreciate a couple of extra bodies for back stage work – prompt, props, lights etc. Anyone daft enough to join our merry troupe, please contact Mary Hamilton on 834367 – no experience necessary.
Long Walk – July’s walk to Llansteffan was again a scorching hot day but we explored the castle and walked to St. Anthony’s healing well and down to the beach at Scott’s Bay. We managed a late lunch at Daisy’s near Pen y Bedd Woods. (Seem to be making Daisy’s a ‘must go to’ place.) In October we plan to go to Llyn Llech Owain Country Park near Crosshands. His nature reserve is a Site of Scientific Interest with walking routes. The autumn colours should be especially beautiful and there is a nice café.
Short Walk – The October walk will be to Penybedd Woods, where post walk refreshments will be at Daisy’s, with mouth-wateringly gorgeous cakes. In July our short walk to check on the ferry service from Ferryside to Llansteffan found the boat locked up in a compound and not yet available for public service.
Luncheon Group – The next posh nosh, in October, will be to Y Polyn, Capel Dewi, meet in free car park as usual for lifts.
Welsh History – Sheila has speakers planned up until next February, but she wishes to retire as leader so we are looking for someone to take over the group from March 2019. IS IT YOU? _ PLEASE CONTACT PAUL.
Film Group – We loved Shakespeare in Love earlier this month. Forthcoming attractions are Whistle Down the Wind (Oct) and Love Actually (Nov).
Main Meeting – It is very reassuring to know that we have such a committed medical team working with the Welsh Air Ambulance. Our July speaker explained the entire procedure from the distress call through to hospital admission. Thanks you everyone for contributing to their funds. Our July speaker, Loveleen Bowes who has an optician’s practice in Station Road, came last year to talk about eye degeneration, this time she will giving us hints and tips on how to maintain healthy eyes.
Cycling Group – This group now boasted about 12 members with 8 or 9 taking to the tracks each fortnight. Paul reports an improvement in fitness levels and a few now can use the gears.
Group Convener – In his new role Paul Reynolds has received a suggestion for a Debating Group – watch the noticeboard.
Sunday Lunch – Proving popular the lunch in November will be at The Ship Aground, Pembrey.
U3A Event – An afternoon of Music and Art on Tuesday 9th October at the National Museum, Cardiff. Talks on the Davies art collection and a talk on Margaret Haig Thomas. A special performance by Welsh National Opera singers, 1.30pm to 4.30pm. £15 (Bookings open, call - National Office 0208 466 6139)
New Year Lunch – We know it a long time into the future, but bookings are already being made so we are opting for the Ashburnham Hotel once more on Monday 21st January. 2 courses (main and dessert) at £15 – the same price as last year.
25 Year Anniversary – The committee are looking for your suggestions as to what you would like and what contribution you might make. Please put your thoughts on the clipboard by the noticeboard.
Scarecrows – St Mary’s Church are holding an event on 6th October. We have made a scarecrow at Craft for U3A, sorry we were not able to notify you earlier so that you could contribute to its construction.
Motherhood – (as collected by Glenys)
Giving birth: Don’t compare yourself with other mums,
When you go to the hospital we’re all a hot mess.
And swap your brain for babies. Some just hide it better than others.
